Riding accident sets Lyndsey on course for a brand new canine career

Riding accident sets Lyndsey on course for a brand new canine career

A BELSAY woman has turned to man's best friend after an nasty injury put a stop to her original career.

Other instructors have come on board and this has enabled the business to look after all areas of a dog's welfare.

As she helped teach Border Collie Grace to work sheep on a local farm, where she lives with her partner, and her cocker spaniel Sweep is a working gundog, Lyndsey did a dog grooming course online.

Practical courses followed and she enjoyed them all.

The Stamfordham resident has two Saarloos wolfhounds.

"The premises are excellent for us because the unit is big enough for everything we need indoors and we have acres of farmland in which to walk the dogs.

But the 27-year-old was determined to do something useful when she was injured and the answer came in the form of her other favourite animal.

"I was in hospital for three days and I suffered a subtalar fracture of the foot.

"I was upset because I couldn't get my foot to the correct angle to ride a horse and I haven't been back on one since the accident.

"A high percentage of canines are of a gundog breed, so they need regular stimulation and activity and it isn't good for them to be left at home for long periods.

She is studying towards a gold level award with the Academy of Dog Trainers and Behaviourists (ADTB).

Susan has an NVQ level two in animal care, an NVQ level three in pet care management, has the ADTB gold standard and is presently studying towards a foundation degree in advanced canine management and psychology.

"But as one door closed, another door opened with the dog training courses and I'm glad in a way how things have turned out because I enjoy working for myself and I get a lot of reward out of developing people's dogs.

"My degree looks into the brain function of dogs, which I'm applying to my classes and one-to-one behavioural consultations," she said.

Lyndsey said: "On the day of the accident, I was riding out for a friend when suddenly the horse reared up and fell on me.

As well as a 140sq m arena - there is a no kennel policy - it offers walking, feeding and interaction with other dogs, a full grooming service and training classes for all ages and abilities.

"We treat each dog we take care of as if they were our own and as we're all living increasingly busy lives, we're happy to supply day care for full days (8am up to 6pm), half days or on an hourly basis.

Things Pet Stores Don't Want You To Know

Things Pet Stores Don't Want You To Know

The $51 billion pet industry isn't always cute and cuddly.

The stores say veterinarians regularly check animals' health.

Shoppers should still carefully examine the animal for physical symptoms and unusual behavior before buying. Stores might also include "warranties" with similar coverage. Many states have "lemon laws" covering pet owners' veterinary bills for illnesses and injuries existing at the time of the animal's purchase, Menkin says. "As soon as you get your pet, bring them to your veterinarian," she says. ) It can also help to check with animal fancier groups and retailers that specialize in a particular animal, especially if it's exotic, Kaplan says. (Petland and Petco both say they do. "Pet stores do not always know everything about the animals they're selling," she says.

"Fido came from a puppy mill.

Displays vary widely from store to store, but good pet stores make an effort to meet the animal's needs, says Michael Maddox, a vice president at the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council. "Petco always recommends that anyone looking to add a brand new pet to their family consider adopting a companion animal in need of a loving home -- rather than purchasing one -- even if it's an animal we sell in our stores," a spokeswoman says.

But Patti Strand, national director of the National Animal Interest Alliance, says buying from a pet store shouldn't automatically be out of the running. Petland's spokeswoman says the store's policy is to source puppies only from local adoption groups, hobby breeders (as defined by the Animal Welfare Act), and USDA-licensed breeders with no direct violations on their latest inspection report. Pet stores can be the sole source of particular breeds in some areas, and a better alternative than buying sight unseen. Plus, as Schnitz found, stores may also use enclosures as a product showcase, even if those items aren't a perfect fit for that species -- or safe for it. Petco uses veterinary and engineering experts to design its displays, a spokeswoman says, and products placed in them are reviewed for safety by in-house and independent veterinarians and other experts. 99 at PetSmart. Dollar stores usually carry tug ropes and plush toys, at a discount of half or better, says Teri Gault, founder of TheGroceryGame. 99 at Petco and PetSmart, while Safeway has it for $9. "Most pet store puppies come from puppy mills," she says.

A 2010 audit of USDA enforcement by the Office of the Inspector General found that the department didn't properly cite breeders' violations, and that the enforcement process was ineffective at curbing repeat violators. "One problematic breeder is one too many, so we stay on top of those individuals and make certain they adhere to the regulations," he says.

Pet-store purchasers do risk getting an unhealthy puppy from a bad breeding facility, says veterinary specialist Dr. Muddled breeding lines can bring out congenital defects, she says. Ongoing salmonella outbreaks linked to contact with turtles and African dwarf frogs have sickened 124 and 241 consumers, respectively. Puppies, kittens and other mammals may transmit parasites, while reptiles and amphibians can carry salmonella, says Dr. At Petco, a recent sale reduced the price to $6. But more frequent sales give an edge to supermarket pricing, Gault says. When it's on sale, the same bag goes for $5. 67, versus $49. Target edges out pet store Wag. 49 rather than $144.

Pet food and treats require more diligent shopping, especially if you're buying a mass-market products, says Paris Permenter, author of "Barkonomics. " Petland and Petco both offer hand-washing stations, and Petland requires their use before and after handling animals. An FDA spokeswoman says consumers should also be on the lookout for recalls. com's Zhang says the site pulls recalled items from the site and emails all customers who purchased affected food, offering them a free -- safe -- replacement.

. (Online pet store prices can be even cheaper, but shipping charges often add to the price. Free shipping offers typically exclude food. com on the ScoopFree Ultra self-cleaning litter box with a price of $135. At Wal-Mart, an "intermediate"-size Remington plastic pet carrier is $38. Big-box stores, drugstores and supermarkets tend to have better supply prices, too. com, a price-tracking site. Some allow claims as far as two years after purchase if the pet is found to have a congenital or hereditary defect.

In recent years, the government also traced outbreaks of monkeypox (a virus in the smallpox family) and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (a form of meningitis) to pet store animals. Since August, the CDC has tallied 46 cases of salmonella linked to pet owners handling frozen feeder mice, while another 22 fell ill with it after contact with contaminated dry dog food.

Consumers' best recourse is limited contact with store animals and petfood, and vigorous hand-washing immediately after, says Barton Behravesh. Dogs from commercial breeders might have more extensive congenital defects -- like heart disease, blood disorders and hip dysplasia -- that may not become apparent for several years, she says. Dogs and cats adopted from stores' rescue partners can have those same health problems, too. "They bring up a complete totally different range of infectious diseases. " After Hurricane Katrina, for example, rescued dogs sent to other states for adoption spread ringworm and heartworm. " Overcrowding is a problem, too, to the point where "they house different species together that would never be found together in the wild," she says. For puppies, there's also parvovirus and distemper, viruses that can lead to lifelong complications or death. Pet store puppies can cost upwards of $1,000, but bad living conditions at puppy mills and too-early separation from their mothers often make puppies sick (see laceable tank liner instead. "They thought this looked better, and it sold more bark," Schnitz recalls.

Experts say store enclosures are rarely accurate models of what a house setup should look like. Wag. "The chance of getting a disease from animals at Petco is much lower than that from handling raw chicken or beef from your local grocery store," a spokeswoman says. She was surprised to see the store used bark chips on the bottom of the reptile cages, which many experts caution against.

Good dog, good job? More dogs sit, stay at work

Good dog, good job? More dogs sit, stay at work

Like any new addition to an office, Dolly had an adjustment period.

"Engineering and software companies are frequently the type of company that is pet-friendly," Kain said. You get a more efficient workplace, one that's not consumed with stress.

"It's such a brilliant way to create a productive atmosphere.

Having animals around also encourages camaraderie, McCormack said. They are automatic conversation starters and ice breakers.

"I consider it a benefit like health care.

She introduced Dolly to Authentic's maintenance man, and because Dolly still barked and growled at outside deliverymen, McCormack asked for a heads-up call from the front desk when they arrived.

Now she puts Dolly in her lap until the deliveries are finished.

Dolly's favorite part of coming to work is the attention, McCormack said.

Extrovertic, a health care communications agency with forty employees and offices in New York City and Cambridge, Mass.

At the same time, McCormack added, "They are a calming force. 3 million dogs to work every day, according to an American Pet Products Association survey last year. On June 22 this year, it is sponsored by North Carolina-based Pet Sitters International to promote adoption.

"We are a small agency. We want the quality of our employees' lives to be better than they would get at a bigger agency. Having dogs in the office is another way of saying, 'We are different and we really care about you,'" said company CEO Dorothy Wetzel.

Fifteen to 20 of the 120 employees or freelancers working at Authentic Entertainment bring their dogs to work, said co-founder and executive producer Lauren Lexton.

For others, allowing pets may be a way to help make do with fewer employees working longer hours.

At Authentic Entertainment, Dolly's biggest hurdle was deliverymen.

When you have great people, you would like to keep them forever, she explained, so if they have a dog that's used to coming to work, the individual is less likely to accept a better job offer if it comes along. At work, Dolly is Miss November in a calendar featuring employee dogs as characters on their shows.

"She is the toast of the town," McCormack said.

Dogs are good for business, too

Dogs, long anointed man's best friends are about to get yet another laurel: they are good for business.

"Dogs are not just effective stress busters, in single-child nuclear families, they often play the role of a companion," observes Shailesh Omkar, a professional dog breeder and trainer for over two decades.

In Pune alone, around 300-400 pedigree pups are sold every month, Sanjay Devare, a distributor for pet food in Pune and Mumbai quotes. Typically, owners spend anything from Rs 3000 to Rs 10,000 a month on each of their pets.

To boot there is an army of service providers who have stepped in: veterinarians, trainers, 'beauticians', pet shop owners, dog-hostel owners, toys and accessories makers, and even dog walkers who, one hears, can earn up to Rs 60,000 a month in one of Mumbai's elite quarters. Special needs could include hospitalisation for surgery at a private pet hospital and care during pregnancy.

Avalon Unveils Pet Evacuation Trailer

Avalon Unveils Pet Evacuation Trailer

This borough seems to abide by the motto "Prepare for the worst.

"There is a tremendous need for local communities, counties, and the state to embrace the issue of pets and their owners during significant storm events. Instead of avoiding the issue, Avalon embraced it as a public safety initiative to save lives.

During two successive blizzards in February, 2010 the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department housed dozens of residents upstairs at the fire house; these residents had no electricity or communications in their homes due to downed power lines.

"This evacuation made it clear to us in Avalon that we needed to implement a new program to accommodate pet owners who had no place to go during a major storm," Pagliughi said. We relocated these people along with their pets to our firehouse and immediately developed a plan that led us to the development of the county's first pet evacuation trailer.

During an evacuation event, pet owners will travel with their own pets to Avalon's designated shelter. The pet owners themselves will help care for their own pets and offer them food and comfort during the emergency with assistance from Avalon shelter operators.

Red Cross rules mandate no animals in emergency shelters, so borough officials knew their work was already partially planned: get a mobile pet shelter.

Communities through the state learned during the Hurricane Irene event in August, 2011 that shelters throughout the state don't accept pets for various safety, health, and liability reasons. "We were lucky with Hurricane Irene," Pagliughi said.

"Coastal residents need to realize that if we have got a major hurricane at the Jersey Shore homes may be without power, climate control, and communications for several weeks. The trailer now includes climate control, running water, an awning, a veterinary work station, a wash basin for pets, a refrigerator, and a generator hook up.

At a cost of $24,000, deferred by $20,000 in donations, the air conditioned and heated trailer is ready to be transported where needed.

The borough acquired and created Cape May County's first-ever pet evacuation trailer which will reunite pets with their owners during a localized or out of county evacuation event. Our number one responsibility in Avalon is to provide for the health, safety and welfare of our residents. This pet evacuation shelter helps us accomplish that goal.

Earlier this year, the Borough acquired a pre-owned "Great Dane" trailer that is in excellent condition from Atlantic Utility Trailer Sales. Lives have been lost unnecessarily in other communities in the United States because officials did not embrace this issue.

"This is a case where the Avalon Office of Emergency Management is meeting a need that has already been demonstrated in our community," Pagliughi said. And, Avalon will certainly make the trailer available to other partners in emergency management when a need arises in another community.

The majority of pet owners stated they would not leave unless their pets could leave with them. This survey guided the Avalon Office of Emergency Management to develop a pet evacuation trailer that met the community's needs.

The borough has been in contact with county and state emergency management officials regarding the availability of the trailer.

Generous donations from corporate sponsors have defrayed most of the costs associated with the acquisition and customizing of the pet evacuation trailer. The Avalon Department of Public Works has customized the trailer with necessary amenities for the safety, health, and comfort of the pets. Last summer, Tipping volunteered at the Avalon shelter during the Hurricane Irene event. The trailer will have nearly 70 cages to accommodate cats and dogs of all sizes.

Pets still for sale on internet

Pets still for sale on internet

More has to be done to prevent the illegal sale of pets over the internet, UAE animal welfare groups have said.

She added: "There are far too many people selling animals illegally, especially online.

The UAE Animal Welfare Enforcement Request, a petition on the Friends of Animals website, which has been circulating since 2010, is also calling for action to be taken.

Kaberfarm management was not available for comment, but the website states it has "no control over the quality, safety or legality of the items advertised".

Max Spicer, the managing partner at Dubai veterinary hospital, said the public's awareness of the issue "has greatly improved", but it isn't yet good enough.

The number of animals abandoned in the UAE increases during the summer months as owners who no longer want to care for their pets leave the country.

Hisham Fahmi, a veterinary expert at the Dubai Muncipality Veterinary Services (DMVS), said the authorities do contact individuals who advertise pets online "to catch those who violate the law".

He said they also follow up all complaints from the public.

Last week, DMVS signed a training agreement for staff with the London-based World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Most, including the Dubai Animal Rescue Centre (Darc), are struggling to cope. "I get about eight to 10 calls a day, mostly from people looking for a place to dump their pet," she said.

Lesley Muncey, the organisation's chairwoman, said people advertise pets like cats and dogs under the pretext they are being given up for adoption, "but once you call they ask for money".

He added: "It is hard to understand why anyone would buy an animal from a person they don't know on the internet, instead of a shop with proper certificates.

According to Mr Fahmi, animal rights laws "should be federal" and not different for every emirate.

As such, the number of groups that care for and rehome animals has also increased to about 24.

Emirati Ms Kelaif, whose husband died a few months ago, said times are "especially difficult" because she isn't allowed, for cultural reasons, to hire male workers to help out at the centre.

"It is an organisation with a great deal of experience.

L.A. Animal Services: Could Adopting a Pet Risk Your Identity?

L.A. Animal Services: Could Adopting a Pet Risk Your Identity?

When someone adopts a homeless animal or redeems a lost pet from a Los Angeles City animal shelter, shouldn't they expect that General Manager Brenda Barnette is making every effort to assure the personal information required by this municipal agency--including a California driver's license-willl never be shared with private companies and/or sold to marketing lists?

When you license your dog, relinquish an animal, bring in a stray, get a spay/neuter voucher. After discussion, reviewing a written objection and allowing one-minute per person of public input, the Animal Services Commission continued the matter until May 22.

Commissioner Kathleen Riordan, daughter of former Mayor Richard Riordan, intensely questioned whether this issue was researched to determine and address any alleged deficits in the current Chameleon system--used nationally by public and private animal shelters because of its design capacity, security and interface capabilities. ".

That could soon change if Animal Services GM Brenda Barnette gets her way.

At that second meeting, a full-blown draft RFP was presented.

At the April 24, 2012 meeting of the Animal Services Commission, the last item by GM Barnette (who claims to know little about computer systems) was approval of the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for: "…the selection of a contractor to provide a new animal-data management system; and…report back to the Board on the contractor selected based on the recommendations of the [in-house] evaluation panel.

There are no details of what advantages or additional benefits the proposed new system would provide and no specifications to insure how confidential City records and individual-identity information will be encrypted, coded, stored or protected.

Sanctuary urges pet owners to spay animals

A CITY animal sanctuary is encouraging pet owners to take advantage of a scheme to help combat the problem of unwanted litters.

"While there will always be genuine reasons for us to care for unwanted adults, unwanted litters are completely avoidable if owners would only get their pets neutered.

Save and Spay stamps can be used for dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs - male or female.

Carole Bowles MBE, Woodside founder, said: "We know that even with our low-cost scheme for owners on benefit or state pension, many still struggle to meet neutering costs in one payment.

Some litters can be in care for over two months, considerably more if illness is involved, and the longer the stay, the longer the queue gets for other needy animals waiting for free space.

At the moment the Elfordleigh sanctuary is looking after around 35 kittens with more on the way and two rabbit litters (around six in each) with another litter expected.

New animal shelter also boosts quality of community

New animal shelter also boosts quality of community

The case can be made that responsible animal control speaks volumes about a community.

If all pet owners acted responsibly, the need to control and shelter unwanted animals would be negligible.

Other amenities include: outdoor space for the animals to exercise; ample parking and handicap accessibility; top-quality ventilation designed to control the spread of disease; an isolation area to segregate incoming strays; a surgery room; and meeting rooms for instruction and familiarizing families with their new pets. and a 5K walk/ run begins at 2 p.

The new facility is approximately 10,000 square-feet, nearly double the size of the existing shelter at 919 E. It includes 84 cat cages, 53 dog cages and 25 outdoor cages.

The $2 million cost of the project includes money from Jefferson City's capital improvement sales tax, Cole County, Friends of the Jefferson City Animal Shelter, Heart of Missouri Humane Society and private donations.

A feature at the new shelter is an in-house spay and neutering service, which officials estimate will save the city $50,000 a year.

An open house will be held today at the new shelter on Hyde Park Road.

This partnership represents governments, organizations and individuals willing to invest in the health and safety of our community.

Sadly, that isn't the case. The cages are capable of holding more than one animal.

Our community may take comfort, however, in the understanding that government officials and private citizens are dedicated both to public welfare and the compassionate control of unwanted animals.

People spending more money on pets

Pet owners appear to be spending more on furry companions, going by the business at the shops and farms.

Pet owners are also splurging on pet care, with some prepared to pay up to S$10,000 for surgery.

Eric Lim, director of Ericsson Pet Farm, said: "Spending on animals has increased a lot.

Dr Jason Teo E-Shen, a veterinary surgeon, said: "They treat their pets as part of their family and are willing to go all the way.

One of the rabbits is touted as a champion at a rabbit show in the US, and comes with a price tag of S$8,000.

According to pet shop owners, interest in these American-imported rabbit breeds began two years ago.

The Holland Lops, Miniature Lion Lops and Netherland Dwarf rabbits do not come cheap. But today, people can spend up to S$10,000 on the dogs. They do know a lot more about animals and they are willing to come down to consult a doctor when there is a problem.

What's Wrong With 'Lap Dances for Lap Dogs?'

What's Wrong With 'Lap Dances for Lap Dogs?'

When it comes to promotional ideas, there's quite a range, from brilliant, to bad, to colossally stupid.

There's an old adage about baseball - it doesn't matter how many games you've seen, you'll see something new every time.

The animal welfare field can't claim major disasters on this scale, but has had some questionable promotions. Loads of animals found new homes in record time.

But, we turned down a similar idea proposed by one local resident who pulled for the cross-Bay rival.

Vick paid a price. Still, many people felt very strongly he was the last person an animal welfare group should hold hands with for photos opps. Promotional balls rained on the field after every bad call.

But, in the coming weeks, we'll be trying something a bit controversial: paying people to adopt Chihuahuas! The pint-sized pups are the most common breed in all Bay Area shelters.

We think there is an easier way to rehome them.

Don't worry, we won't simply open our doors and hand out Chihuahuas and ten-spots.

The nation's largest and richest national animal welfare organization, the Humane Society of the United States - which contributes exactly $0 to PHS/SPCA and animals here in San Mateo County - put their top thinkers together and decided to stand next to Michael Vick after he was released from prison for torturing dogs and running an illegal and horrific dog fighting program and compound. Just one small snag with that: not many green or gold pets available for adoption.

Baseball fans can be salty and love hurling insults at opposing players and umpires. Given the fact that some of these dogs await their new, forever homes in shelters for months simply because there are so many, $10 is next to nothing when it is compared to the costs to care for a dog for an extended amount of time in a shelter.

Bid to stop pet shops selling cats and dogs

Bid to stop pet shops selling cats and dogs

Animal-welfare groups in Dubai are calling for a ban on the sale of dogs and cats from pet shops.

Sterilisation is also an excellent way to reduce the numbers of unwanted pets.

A female cat can give birth to a litter of between two and 10 kittens at least three times a year, said Ms Muncey.

Samer Ayach, the managing director of Pet Zone, a shop and boarding kennel, said he would be the first to stop selling animals if it helped reduce the number of abandoned pets.

Margit Muller, director of Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, that provides boarding for cats and dogs, said there was "absolutely no need" to abandon an animal when going on holiday.

"It is very irresponsible and entirely unacceptable to expose it to starvation and possible death," she added.

"At the end of the summer season, we discover quite a few animals left behind by their owners," said Mr Ayach.

"We have hundreds of unwanted animals right now and no one is coming to take them home," she added.

Dr Hisham Fahmi, a veterinary expert at Dubai Municipality Veterinary Services (DMVS), said no law to stop selling pets was in the pipeline.

People can ask DMVS to rehome their animals, but they also have the option to euthanise them.

Pet owners buying into fresh food trend

Pet owners buying into fresh food trend

Recent pet food recalls and high consumer interest in natural and organic products has lead some pet owners to walk past the traditional bags of kibble in the pet store and towards the fresh pet food in the refrigerated section.

Pet owners are buying into the trend.

However, retailers warn that pet owners will spend more on fresh pet food products than they would on regular pet food. But new data shows those owners are becoming more concerned about what's in the food. That's up from $1.

Fresh pet food contains many ingredients pet owners would buy for themselves, like real meat and vegetables, but is designed specifically for the nutritional requirements of pets. It's completely cooked for the dog and all you would have to do is come into the store, purchase this, and it even gives you a chart on how much to feed per pound. 3 billion in 2007.

Crackdown on illegal dog fur trade

Crackdown on illegal dog fur trade

FEARS that Victorians rugging up in this season's faux fur designs could unwittingly be wearing dog fur have spurred Customs and Border Protection to increase surveillance in a crackdown on the illegal trade.

''The Asian markets are aware we are not likely to buy domestic pet fur, so it may be labelled rabbit, specify no species at all, or even labelled faux fur,'' she said.

According to animals rights groups, 10 million dogs and cats are killed for their fur each year, mainly in China, Thailand, the Philippines and Korea.

HSI director Verna Simpson said it was often cheaper for Asian manufacturers to use dog fur instead of synthetic or other animal fur, which they sold to unsuspecting retailers.

Ms Simpson said although most major retail fashion outlets had stopped using animal fur, many smaller boutiques and designer labels continued to use it, mainly as trimming on vests, coats, scarves, gloves and hats.

Protect yourself from Internet pet scams

You or a family member has been dreaming of owning a pet for some time. Once a pet has been "sold" several times, the scammers simply move on. In a later email, she was advised a special air-conditioned shipping kennel was needed or the airlines would refuse to transport the puppy.

That would cost another $950, but she was assured that "upon the delivery of the puppy, $900 will be refunded back to you" and the delivery people would take back the kennel.

End of an era for Ernie's

End of an era for Ernie's

After forty years in the pet business, Ernie Crankshaw is ready for retirement.

"I've got a lot of things to do," he said.

"You should have merchandise that the customer wants, such as good quality fish, and be courteous to the customer whether they are right or wrong," he said. He estimates that his service area and customer base reaches about 180 miles around North Platte.

"I've seen a lot of pet shops come and go, but most do not last very long," he said.

Last month he decided to get rid of the shop and retire.

His shop is currently in its fourth location at 110 West Front St.

Items at the shop are now 20 % off, that will increase later to 30 percent, and he plans to have an auction for the remaining items during the first week in July.

Crankshaw, 83, is originally from Grand Rapids, Mich.

"I married a girl from Chadron and worked for her brother at Allied Van Lines for twenty five years," Crankshaw said.

Vawn Stark, of Vawn's Barber and Style Shop, worked next door to Crankshaw and his shop for about twenty-five years, before the building his shop was in was demolished.

Crankshaw left Allied Van Lines in 1988 and "went strictly with pets" after that, running his pet shop on a full-time basis. Later, the shop moved to the corner of Jeffers and 6th Streets. His first location was at 2721 Rodeo Road, then at East 5th Street in 1977.

"You'll never meet a nicer man," she said.

Crankshaw's wife, Marilyn, died in January, and the couple had three children, David, Debbie and Sandi, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

"I've seen a lot of people come and go," he reflected on his many years in the pet business.

Crankshaw has some advice for anyone who is thinking about getting into the pet business. When that building was torn down to make room for a parking lot, he moved to his current location in 2009.

Bid to stop pet shops selling cats and dogs

Bid to stop pet shops selling cats and dogs

Animal-welfare groups in Dubai are calling for a ban on the sale of dogs and cats from pet shops.

She believes banning pet shops from selling cats and dogs would force people to adopt from a shelter or buy from a licensed breeder, reducing the amount of animals being imported into the country.

Todd Carson, the managing partner at Dubai Kennels als she saw in the capital.

"It is very irresponsible and entirely unacceptable to expose it to starvation and possible death," she added.

Dr Hisham Fahmi, a veterinary expert at Dubai Municipality Veterinary Services (DMVS), said no law to stop selling pets was in the pipeline.

"At the end of the summer season, we discover quite a few animals left behind by their owners," said Mr Ayach.

Sterilisation is also an ideal way to reduce the numbers of unwanted pets.

A female cat can give birth to a litter of between two and 10 kittens at least three times a year, said Ms Muncey.

"It's a criminal act to abandon your pet - like losing a person in your family," he said.

Lesley Muncey, the chairwoman of Feline Friends, receives about 40 inquiries a day from people seeking new homes for their cats, but usually only 15 from people looking to adopt.

People can ask DMVS to rehome their animals, but they also have the option to euthanise them.

ASPCA Pummels Puppy Mills With Pressure From Consumers, Politicians

ASPCA Pummels Puppy Mills With Pressure From Consumers, Politicians

Hurting puppies is unfathomable to most of us.

Never forget how much puppies need us to continue fighting for them. People are getting the message, and some pet stores have discontinued their puppy sales, including Jack's Pets, which owns and operates 27 regional stores located throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Approximately nine months ago, the ASPCA launched our national "No Pet Store Puppies" campaign. More than 100,000 people have signed a pledge to support our "No Pet Store Puppies" campaign, and these supporters are striking fear in groups that oppose puppy mill reforms. But as long as puppy mills exist, we'll also do all we can to rescue puppies and breeding mothers and fathers who are confined there. All of those puppies who were living in filth are now safe and serving as reminders of why we must continue the fight to protect dogs like them. In fact, those terms are usually meaningless. The puppy sales ads advertise the descendants of "champions" and employ a variety of catchy terms, including certified kennel, AKC registered, pedigreed, and health certified, to sell puppy mill dogs. com and puppyfind. Late last year, we sent a team to Arkansas to rescue more than 150 dogs that were living in a puppy mill.

The "No Pet Store Puppies" campaign has also changed operations at Marketplace on Facebook. In response to concerns raised by the ASPCA, approximately 30,000 puppy sales ads were removed from Marketplace on Facebook in an effort to combat puppy mills.

We hope that Marketplace on Facebook is the first big domino to fall and that websites that sell puppies will discontinue that practice. Schulz's sentiments: "Happiness is a warm puppy. Thankfully, recent developments, including a rule proposed by the USDA that would close a gaping loophole puppy mill operators are exploiting, make me optimistic about the future of our nation's puppies. Many AKC-registered dogs are sold in puppy mills.

One of the reasons that these deceptive practices of selling puppy mill dogs to consumers over the Internet proliferates is that these sales are exempt from any federal oversight.

Why I care about pit bulls

Why I care about pit bulls

About seven years ago, something happened that really surprised me.

In an instant, Hayley was swarmed by a small pack of little people. Hayley tolerated all of the aggressive petting as she always did, with a calm and quite tolerance.

All I really ask is that you do not generalize and make assumptions of dogs you don't know. If you can do that, I guarantee you'll have your kids hanging off my dog the next time I bump into you in the park.

Physically, they are built like tanks and are incredibly strong.

The problem with listening to the media for information is that together with being sensationalized, it's being reported on by people who have little or no knowledge of dogs. I have yet to meet a dog trainer who thought pit bulls were bad.

Pit bulls are an excellent breed that were originally known as the "nanny dog" due to the their great affinity for children.

In an instant, her smile transformed into a shocked grimace and she quickly yanked her daughter away from Hayley.

Soon, Hayley's allure died down, and the kids began to disperse back into the park to play.

After a moment, the mom asked, "What type of dog is she?"

I happily replied, "She's a pit bull.

But take it from someone who has worked with hundreds of dogs and been bitten more than a few times: Pits are not the ones doing most of the biting.

It wasn't long before some of the kids spotted Hayley and ran over to us in excitement. According to the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls actually score about the same as golden retrievers and standard poodles on temperament tests.

This is no surprise to me and other dog professionals

Pet food boss praises workforce after selling up

A PET food boss moving on to pastures new has praised the quality of his former South Tyneside workforce. " .

"All of the staff were offered alternative employment with Medicanimal, but only two people relocated.

"But thankfully, most of the former workforce has found employment.

The business, based at Aidan Court, Bede Industrial Estate, Jarrow, rapidly grew into an internationally successful enterprise, enjoying sales of £500,000 in its first year, before eventually boosting sales to £10m and selling pet food products to dozens of countries. uk, to Medicanimal, of London, with the Jarrow unit closing in March.

But while looking forward, Mr Berriman also paid tribute to some of the 30 staff employed by his Jarrow-based pet supplier.

He said: "Announcing to our staff that I was selling the business on was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

"But despite knowing the business was closing along with their jobs were going, my staff still gave 150 per cent.

But personal issues eventually persuaded Mr Berriman, 32, of Westoe, South Shields, to sell Viverdi, the holding company for Petsupermarket.

"We had a very close-knit group of people at the company, and they knew why I was selling on, but making that decision was still hard.

Now he is planning to launch a whole new software development business, called Gozuku, with business partner Mike Halford.

He added: "The new business is really still in the melting pot, but I would hope to get it off the ground by autumn of this year.

Mr Berriman, a married man with two children, is now looking for the very best development site for Gozuku.

"We are looking at where the unit could be based, and will commence small, in terms of jobs, before expanding.

Big Wyoming Horse Expo provides hands

Learning was in abundance at this year's Big Wyoming Horse Expo as participants learned every thing from how to get their horse used to a trail course, to starting a colt, to classroom topics like equine acupuncture, equine behavior and equine dentistry. You may hear a clicking sound when they are eating from that cap moving around," she said. "Usually, this poses no problems, but sometimes the cap of the baby tooth will be retained.

Most ranch horse competitions involve some form of trail riding, he said. "In one competition, I had to pull a Christmas tree with a teddy bear on top," Gaudreault said. "To prepare yourself and your horse for these competitions, go home and use your imagination. , talked about dental health and how regular dental exams should be a part of a horse's health regimen. Unrein explained. The cap can also get hung up in the gum tissue, so it is swinging back and forth. Unrein encourages horse owners to have their horse's teeth examined by the time they are 2-years-old. As the erupting adult teeth come through, they push out the baby teeth.

Glenn Ryan with the U. Forest Service returned for a second year to teach participants how to pack mules for trips into the forest. His popular presentations have become quite a draw for participants who like to watch his unique style of packing mules with everything from poles and lumber to the traditional packs for a stay in the forest.

First year presenter Steve Mantle with the BLM drew quite a crowd for his presentations on starting a wild horse. The audience watched intently as Mantle started a colt, then moved on to a well-started yearling, and progressed to a saddle horse, while giving the audience tips and hints of how to handle the animals. At the end of his Sunday presentation, Mantle offered all three colts he used during his presentations for adoption to qualified homes. Don't be afraid to try new challenges," he recommended.

Dr. Many characteristics horses have are not shared by other animals. One of the most notable characteristics is their ability to quickly desensitize to something that scares them.

Horses are also quick learners of both good and bad habits. There is no limit to what they might make you do. "A lot of the time, you will see lots of sores and ulcers on the tongue and gums from misalignment or lack of dental care," she said. Unrein likes to move the jaws to make sure the teeth are aligned and the mouth moves freely. "A horse grinds its teeth similar to a cow," she explained. "If the horse can't grind its teeth correctly, then I haven't done my job," she said.

Rick Gaudreault instructed students on ranch horse versatility, trail challenges and obstacles. You may notice this if your horse is trying to use its tongue to flip that cap loose. "If I do something bad to that horse, do you think he will remember me the next time he sees me?" Connally questioned the crowd. That is why I always try to leave things with the horses on a positive note. If I had to do something bad to him, I always try to pet and speak to him, and even get treats from the owners to bribe him. It is extremely important that that horse's last moments with you are positive, from personal point of view as a veterinarian," he said. All three horses were adopted. During the judging clinic, the students placed four classes - stock-type geldings, stock-type mares, western pleasure and western horsemanship. "That is what helps make them so easy to train," he explained.

The more horses are around a person, the more they learn to recognize them. "You bet he will. "Isolation stalls are like jail to a horse. It really screws with their mind, and it will make the horse more dangerous to work around," he said.

USDA seeks change to regulate Internet pet sales

Dog breeders who skirt animal welfare laws by selling puppies over the Internet would face tighter scrutiny under a rule change proposed Thursday by the U.

The proposed change seeks to close that loophole by ensuring that anyone who sells pets over the Internet, by phone or mail order can no longer do so sight-unseen.

"We feel this is certainly a much-needed change to an outdated system," said Rebecca Blue, deputy undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs.

USDA seeks change to regulate Internet pet sales

Dog breeders who skirt animal welfare laws by selling puppies over the Internet would face tighter scrutiny under a rule change proposed Thursday by the U.

The Internet opened a whole new venue for puppy sales, and thousands of large-scale breeders who advertise there have not been subject to oversight or inspection.

"You need to open your home if you breed more than four dogs.

That law, written in 1966, set standards of care for animals bred for commercial sale and research.

Opposition to the change is hard to find.

The change would subject dog owners who breed more than four females and sell the puppies electronically, by mail or over the telephone to the same oversight faced by wholesale dealers as part of the Animal Welfare Act.

"This is a very significant proposed federal action, since thousands of large-scale breeders benefit from a loophole that allows them to escape any federal inspections," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. Dianne Feinstein -- that sought to make similar changes to the regulations.

"We feel this is certainly a much-needed change to an outdated system," said Rebecca Blue, deputy undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs.

The change does not affect backyard breeders who sell puppies from their houses or other physical locations.

"The change will finally allow the USDA to properly enforce violations, shut down puppy mills, and prevent future abuses of dogs and unsuspecting customers," Farr said.

The change comes as Congress considers legislation backed by two Californians -- Rep. Farr welcomed the USDA's decision.

The proposed change seeks to close that loophole by ensuring that anyone who sells pets over the Internet, by phone or mail order can no longer do so sight-unseen. We need more eyes on these operations, and this rule will help.

The USDA will accept comments on the proposed rule change for 60 days.

Your pet wants your food

Your pet wants your food

Cats and dogs are incredibly food-driven - I've never met one that wasn't.

I'm sure you have your own story of an especially daring or shocking case of food theft by a pet.

Worst one I had was my youngest dog jumping on the dining area chair on to the table, from there on to the bench and he helped himself to a fresh loaf of homemade wholemeal bread (at least it was semi-healthy!). We came home and had to take the two dogs to the vet and a visit to the dentist for me to get more antibiotics! *Sigh*.

So it's not just me feeling like the worst 'cat mummy' in the world! Recent SPCA arrival takes every chance she can get to go for my food. And taken two unattended bread bags to their deaths . They think they have a never ending stomach.

Had a lab/retriever/heeler mix once.

One year we had purchased a new fridge, and stored the old one in an unused room until we could borrow a truck to haul it away. The dog took the candy off the counter, unwrapped each and ate it, then hid the evidence under the old fridge. We've come home once to see he got into the freezer. He ate his way through half a pack of mince, a lamb shank and had started on a pack of rissoles.

If we are home however and he manages to get his jaws on something, he'll bring it to us and put it down as if to a) reprimand us for leaving food around while b) asking for permission to eat it. But if no human is watching, he'll wander around and eat whatever is within reach. He knows it's wrong, but he'll do it anyway if he can get away with it. In a human this would be sociopathic, but in a dog it's just typical.

My other dog, Phoebe, can't spring on to the full-height table as Connor can, but she has another specialty: sideways tongue.

They don't see it as stealing, of course. What was worse was that I got a lecture when I returned home later about how disappointed they were that the dogs were so badly behaved. You hear horror stories of beagles getting into the fridge or cupboard and eating everything in there. Think she is getting better but gosh, what a trickster! Might be a throwback, though, as she was apparently taken from the house of a cat hoarder . Just gives the bags a good savaging! She also begs for food from my dinner plate, which I'm strict on not giving her. When my dad got home, the poor dog decided she couldn't lie about it and put herself in time-out.

we made a batch of red velvet cupcakes recently and hadleft them on the bench after icing them with cream cheese frosting while heading to the shops for candles. urgh. Or if the bag is not too 'rubbishy' just squirt a bit in before tying up the bag.

We have a beagle at home, he can get into anything and is very food driven.

State's Pet "Lemon Law" Passes House of Representatives

State's Pet "Lemon Law" Passes House of Representatives

Pet stores that knowingly sell sick dogs or cats are often betting that their customers "will have fallen in love," by the time they seek veterinary treatment for the animal, state Rep.

Supporters say it will help set a higher business standard for pet shops and discourage retailers from using puppy mills to offer their stores. Nine times out of 10 they had fallen in love with the animal," Kupchick said.

"We would never force someone to return a dog.

But in some cases, customers who asked for the veterinary reimbursement were told they had to return the dog or cat.

"In Connecticut, we have several reputable breeders, rescues and shelters that provide healthy dogs and cats for sale or adoption," Kupchick said.

"This will allow people to keep their pet," she said.

The current law requires pet stores reimburse the new pet owner up to $500 for licensed veterinary care, or replace the animal or provide a full refund to the new pet owner if it becomes ill within 20 days of sale or is found to have a genetic defect within six months of sale.

A bill that would close the "love loophole" and allow new pet owners to keep their animals and still be compensated for vet bills, unanimously passed the House of Representatives Friday.

The bill, which targets for-profit pet stores, does not apply to shelters and rescue organizations.

The measure, which Kupchick helped craft, was expected to be taken up by the Senate late Tuesday or Wednesday.

However, Brunner said he believes personal breeders and animal rescue groups should also be covered by the bill's regulations.

"It's unfortunate that we have to legislate humane treatment, but the sad truth is, there are individuals who view animals as only a source of profit," she added.

"My feeling is if the ruling is good for me, it should be good for anyone selling an animal," said Brunner who's owned the West Hartford pet store for 14 years.

Ron Brunner, owner of the West Hartford Puppy Center and Aquarium, said he has no quarrel with the proposed bill.

The measure also allows the state agriculture commissioner to fine pet shops, grooming facilities and licensed commercial kennels up to $500 per animal for unsanitary or inhumane conditions or other conditions that pose a danger to public safety.

Adopting a 45-mph couch potato? What to know

Adopting a 45-mph couch potato? What to know

Being inside a home is a new experience for the majority of this special breed.

With their short hair, they're very susceptible to cold (and heat exhaustion). They can get tangled up and injure themselves, or will pull, wiggle or chew their way out.

They can generate a lot of power within a couple of seconds.

As with all sight-hounds, they cannot be let off-leash in an un-enclosed area.

Several years ago the greyhound population in the Yarmouth area was larger than it is now.

Shelley White and Paul Plourde adopted two greyhounds: Indy, a brindle grey male; and Juno, a white and gold female. " They are generally a kind, well-behaved, affectionate and non-aggressive breed.

For instance, a potential adopter might have his eye on a small, black female but may find out that certain dog isn't "cat friendly," therefore it will be recommended that another dog be selected or several dogs may be recommended, based on the life style profile.

The greyhounds arrive at the kennel (completely serviced 100 per cent by volunteers like White and Plourde) approximately every 45 days, all through the year. Watching these beautiful, elegant, dogs begin to blossom is one of the joys of adopting these retired racers.

White says traditionally, in the racing world, most greys were thought of as property and income.

With patience and love, however, each new challenge can be conquered.

Potential adopters can generally choose their dog, but during the adoption process, a profile of your lifestyle must be provided and, based on the answers to certain questions, a select few dogs will be recommended as dogs that would blend well into your household.

Greyhounds are more than worth the investment of time and love.

They are well-trained dogs, including crate training; they arrive with an entire medical history and documentation of their bloodline which can be traced back for several generations; they have been tested with cats to see if they are compatible; they've received complete veterinary care and vaccines prior to exiting the U.

There are many different colours available as well as a good mix of males and females to choose from. They arrive with their "racing name," but new owners are free to change that.

Unless airfare is involved, the total cost for adoption is $275. and after entry to Canada and arriving at the Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC) kennel; this organization has a strong mandate to ensure that the dogs are fully evaluated and assessed for anxiety, fear, depression and frustration.

Once a greyhound is placed, GPAC provides full 24-hour support, training and behaviour consultation.

They adapt better to a household with a schedule because this offers them safety and security.

Huntington Beach to look again at pet sales ban

Huntington Beach to look again at pet sales ban

City Council members to take into account options for banning retail pet sales.

City Attorney Jennifer McGrath wrote in her report that the city worked with owners of Pets, Pets, Pets and Animal Kingdom as well as various animal rights groups to draft up the proposed ordinance.

Coming up with a possible two-year transitional period seemed a good compromise, some council members said.

City Council members at their meeting on Monday will be provided with two options: an all-out ban that would go into effect after a two-year transitional period or allowing the sale of pets obtained from shelters or rescues after the two-year transition. Irvine City Council members passed a ban in October and Lake Forest officials are required to take up the issue this summer.

Pet stores that get their animals from puppy mills or other facilities which are considered inhumane have been controversial for several years as federal regulators have uncovered the poor conditions in which many of these animals are kept.

"This is a win-win situation to me," Joe Shaw said at the April meeting.

Often the animals are scrunched in cages that are not cleaned.

Huntington Beach is the fourth Orange County city to take up a discussion on the possible ban in recent months.

"Although the animal rights activists will be seeking additional regulation in the years to come, all parties agreed that (the second option) met two goals: prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats from puppy or kitten mills; encouraging the adoption/sale of rescued and/or sheltered animals," McGrath wrote in the report.

Animal rights groups have been aggressively encouraging pet adoption in Orange County, which is considered the most proactive county in the state for taking a stand against puppy mills, according to an Orange County Register article.

San Clemente rejects plea to revisit vote against pet

San Clemente rejects plea to revisit vote against pet

President of the Pet Project Foundation, the primary support group for the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter, joins an Orange County advocacy group in calling for the City Council to again consider banning pet stores from selling dogs and cats as a means to target mass-breeding 'puppy mills.

Walshe recalled that in 2005, the shelter and its Pet Project Foundation volunteers nursed 35 Pomeranian puppies back to health after they were seized from a house in Dana Point, where they were "very sick and dying. "I do not think we have any kind of stuff like that around here.

"That cost PPF well over $20,000, getting them all well again and ready for adoption," Walshe said.

Walshe told the council that some pet stores that are no longer able to sell puppies "are inviting shelters and rescue groups such as ours to showcase their animals for adoption.

In 2011, 12 pit bull puppies arrived at the shelter with parvovirus.

San Clemente has no pet stores that sell dogs and cats.

Walshe said dogs from puppy mills often are bred inhumanely and that many people who bought them no longer want them.

Stephen Terry, co-founder of the group, said that as other cities prohibit pet stores from selling dogs and cats, stores that do so will move to cities that allow it, like San Clemente.

But Mayor Jim Evert later reiterated his view that not all pet stores are alike and that they should not be targeted - puppy mills ought to be.

Walshe asked the council Tuesday for a ban on the basis that "each year, thousands of perfectly healthy pets are put to death because of the huge excess of their numbers, driven by the greed of the puppy-mill trade and inhumane commercial breeders, for which it is all about the big bucks.

Councilwoman Lori Donchak, who cast the lone vote in favor of the ban, asked her colleagues this week to put the issue on a future council agenda for reconsideration, with a fuller report from city staff.

Aliso Viejo bans commercial dog, cat sales

ALISO VIEJO - Commercial breeders referred to as puppy mills will not be able to sell their animals through stores in the city.

Aliso Viejo joins Laguna Beach, Irvine and Dana Point in passing laws to discourage inhumane treatment of animals by regulating pet stores.

No businesses currently sell dogs and cats in Aliso Viejo, and the law would not apply to pet adoptions.

"Right now it's not an issue in our city," Garcia said.
