Why I care about pit bulls

About seven years ago, something happened that really surprised me. In an instant, Hayley was swarmed by a small pack of little people. Hayley tolerated all of the aggressive petting as she always did, with a calm and quite tolerance. All I really ask is that you do not generalize and make assumptions of dogs you don't know. If you can do that, I guarantee you'll have your kids hanging off my dog the next time I bump into you in the park. Physically, they are built like tanks and are incredibly strong. The problem with listening to the media for information is that together with being sensationalized, it's being reported on by people who have little or no knowledge of dogs. I have yet to meet a dog trainer who thought pit bulls were bad. Pit bulls are an excellent breed that were originally known as the "nanny dog" due to the their great affinity for children. In an instant, her smile transformed into a shocked grimace and she quickly yanked her daughter away from Hayley. Soon, Hayley's allure died down, and the kids began to disperse back into the park to play. After a moment, the mom asked, "What type of dog is she?" I happily replied, "She's a pit bull. But take it from someone who has worked with hundreds of dogs and been bitten more than a few times: Pits are not the ones doing most of the biting. It wasn't long before some of the kids spotted Hayley and ran over to us in excitement. According to the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls actually score about the same as golden retrievers and standard poodles on temperament tests. Cats and dogs are incredibly food-driven - I've never met one that wasn't. I'm sure you have your own story of an especially daring or shocking case of food theft by a pet. Worst one I had was my youngest dog jumping on the dining area chair on to the table, from there on to the bench and he helped himself to a fresh loaf of homemade wholemeal bread (at least it was semi-healthy!). We came home and had to take the two dogs to the vet and a visit to the dentist for me to get more antibiotics! *Sigh*. So it's not just me feeling like the worst 'cat mummy' in the world! Recent SPCA arrival takes every chance she can get to go for my food. And taken two unattended bread bags to their deaths . They think they have a never ending stomach. Had a lab/retriever/heeler mix once. One year we had purchased a new fridge, and stored the old one in an unused room until we could borrow a truck to haul it away. The dog took the candy off the counter, unwrapped each and ate it, then hid the evidence under the old fridge. We've come home once to see he got into the freezer. He ate his way through half a pack of mince, a lamb shank and had started on a pack of rissoles. If we are home however and he manages to get his jaws on something, he'll bring it to us and put it down as if to a) reprimand us for leaving food around while b) asking for permission to eat it. But if no human is watching, he'll wander around and eat whatever is within reach. He knows it's wrong, but he'll do it anyway if he can get away with it. In a human this would be sociopathic, but in a dog it's just typical. My other dog, Phoebe, can't spring on to the full-height table as Connor can, but she has another specialty: sideways tongue. They don't see it as stealing, of course. What was worse was that I got a lecture when I returned home later about how disappointed they were that the dogs were so badly behaved. You hear horror stories of beagles getting into the fridge or cupboard and eating everything in there. Think she is getting better but gosh, what a trickster! Might be a throwback, though, as she was apparently taken from the house of a cat hoarder . Just gives the bags a good savaging! She also begs for food from my dinner plate, which I'm strict on not giving her. When my dad got home, the poor dog decided she couldn't lie about it and put herself in time-out. we made a batch of red velvet cupcakes recently and hadleft them on the bench after icing them with cream cheese frosting while heading to the shops for candles. urgh. Or if the bag is not too 'rubbishy' just squirt a bit in before tying up the bag. We have a beagle at home, he can get into anything and is very food driven. |

Supporters say it will help set a higher business standard for pet shops and discourage retailers from using puppy mills to offer their stores. Nine times out of 10 they had fallen in love with the animal," Kupchick said. "We would never force someone to return a dog. But in some cases, customers who asked for the veterinary reimbursement were told they had to return the dog or cat. "In Connecticut, we have several reputable breeders, rescues and shelters that provide healthy dogs and cats for sale or adoption," Kupchick said. "This will allow people to keep their pet," she said. The current law requires pet stores reimburse the new pet owner up to $500 for licensed veterinary care, or replace the animal or provide a full refund to the new pet owner if it becomes ill within 20 days of sale or is found to have a genetic defect within six months of sale. A bill that would close the "love loophole" and allow new pet owners to keep their animals and still be compensated for vet bills, unanimously passed the House of Representatives Friday. The bill, which targets for-profit pet stores, does not apply to shelters and rescue organizations. The measure, which Kupchick helped craft, was expected to be taken up by the Senate late Tuesday or Wednesday. However, Brunner said he believes personal breeders and animal rescue groups should also be covered by the bill's regulations. "It's unfortunate that we have to legislate humane treatment, but the sad truth is, there are individuals who view animals as only a source of profit," she added. "My feeling is if the ruling is good for me, it should be good for anyone selling an animal," said Brunner who's owned the West Hartford pet store for 14 years. Ron Brunner, owner of the West Hartford Puppy Center and Aquarium, said he has no quarrel with the proposed bill. President of the Pet Project Foundation, the primary support group for the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter, joins an Orange County advocacy group in calling for the City Council to again consider banning pet stores from selling dogs and cats as a means to target mass-breeding 'puppy mills. Walshe recalled that in 2005, the shelter and its Pet Project Foundation volunteers nursed 35 Pomeranian puppies back to health after they were seized from a house in Dana Point, where they were "very sick and dying. "I do not think we have any kind of stuff like that around here. "That cost PPF well over $20,000, getting them all well again and ready for adoption," Walshe said. Walshe told the council that some pet stores that are no longer able to sell puppies "are inviting shelters and rescue groups such as ours to showcase their animals for adoption. In 2011, 12 pit bull puppies arrived at the shelter with parvovirus. San Clemente has no pet stores that sell dogs and cats. Walshe said dogs from puppy mills often are bred inhumanely and that many people who bought them no longer want them. Stephen Terry, co-founder of the group, said that as other cities prohibit pet stores from selling dogs and cats, stores that do so will move to cities that allow it, like San Clemente. But Mayor Jim Evert later reiterated his view that not all pet stores are alike and that they should not be targeted - puppy mills ought to be. Walshe asked the council Tuesday for a ban on the basis that "each year, thousands of perfectly healthy pets are put to death because of the huge excess of their numbers, driven by the greed of the puppy-mill trade and inhumane commercial breeders, for which it is all about the big bucks. Councilwoman Lori Donchak, who cast the lone vote in favor of the ban, asked her colleagues this week to put the issue on a future council agenda for reconsideration, with a fuller report from city staff. |
