"Sheila would be talking to the judges, Sheila would be beside the stage, Sheila was be at the front, checking on ticket sales. If someone's dog was overstimulated by being around so many other dogs, Sheila was there to help out. I thought that was cool. "It started out a small local event that ended up being something that's imitated all over the world. Sunday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds activity center, 2250 Jimmy Durante Blvd. "It was great publicity for them ---- they get 50 crazy people with a life-size cutout going into radio stations and TV stations, (posing with) mayors," Ohl said. On Friday, Ohl told me that he didn't win, but that the contest did take him to some interesting places. "You won't go through that event without laughing," she added. Van Zante said McDonnell has tried and tested to be one of those organizers whose work ethic you can't fully appreciate until that person is gone. "Having attended for the last 13 years, it would always amaze me how many places Sheila could be in at the same time," he said. They were all Sheila's dogs," Van Zante said.
